“OUR DEMOCRACY IS IN PERIL IF WE CONTINUE TO ALLOW POLITICIANS TO CHOOSE THEIR VOTERS”
Welcome to the website of the Texas Citizen Redistricting Initiative. The purpose of this initiative is to bring independent citizen redistricting to Texas. We have no illusions that this is an easy task, but it is a necessary one. We hope that you will join us in this monumental undertaking.
A little background: The City of Austin in 2013 established an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission to draw the first-ever single member City Council districts. 14 ordinary citizens, with no connection to city government or elected officials, were assigned the task. In the face of many critics they produced an excellent map which met the voting rights act and provided representation to areas of the city which had never before been represented. They did it on time, fairly and at a minimum cost to the city. Their work has set a model for how redistricting should work. The community mattered. No politician had a say in the outcome.
California has established a citizen redistricting panel to allocate their congressional districts and their state legislative districts. This was brought about, over the objection of both the Democratic and Republican Parties, by Referendum and Initiative in which the voters forced the issue to the ballot. Texas does not have that ability under our constitution, so we must persuade the politicians to do this voluntarily. It is a huge task, but we have to do it.
